How can you apply to Turkish universities? Approximately 70,000 students are currently studying at 185 universities in Turkey. Candidates who graduate from a high school abroad and want to study at a Turkish university, apply to those universitiesdirectly in person.

Here are the answers to your questions about how to apply to Turkish universities.

DO I HAVE TO TAKE ANY CENTRAL EXAMS?

No.  The central selection examination for foreign students was abolished in 2011.

WILL I APPLY TO THE UNIVERSITY?

Yes. Each university announces itsforeign student quota forevery faculty and department, on their own websites.

DO UNIVERSITIES HOLD ANY EXAMINATIONS?

Some universities might hold an examination among the applicants to select the candidates themselves. Those conditions are announced on the universities’ websites.

WHAT IS THE LANGUAGE OF EDUCATION?

At a great majority of Turkish universities, the language of education is Turkish and English. It is also possible to find a few institutions providing education in French and German. Most universities open Turkish courses for foreign students.

IS HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA ENOUGH?

Graduating from a high school abroad takes place on the top among the application criteria. Furthermore, diplomas such as Baccalaureate, Matura or Abitur will have influence in getting accepted. If you have any transition to higher education or high school graduation (maturity / Matura) examination in your home country, you should submit dueexam results to the university. On each university’s website, the acceptable exam scores are displayed.

IS A LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST REQUIRED?

Some universities accept applications by the results of exams such as IELTS or TOEFL. Universities announce their required scores for these exams.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS FOR APPLICATION?

Among the documents you have to submit to the university together with the application form for international students, your high school diploma and transcript (both need to be translated into Turkish or English) are required.Universities whose language of education is 100% English require language proficiency score or hold language proficiency test. If you fail these exams, you will have to attend to the preparatory school for one year.

HOW MANY UNIVERSITIES ARE THERE IN TURKEY?

There are two types of universities in Turkey. One of them is foundation and the other is state university. The number of those universities is 185. But almost every month, establishment of a new university is approved. The number of students studying at those universities, together with the open plan schools, is 5.5 million.

ARE UNIVERSITIES SUPERVISED?

The higher education system is being supervised by the Higher Education Council (YÖK). YÖK is an institution that is responsible for planning, coordination and administration of the higher education system. The programs that universities will open and their student quota are approved by YÖK.

WHEN DOES THE ACADEMIC YEAR START AT UNIVERSITIES?

In Turkey, the academic year usually starts in September and ends by June. One academic year is consisted of two semesters. There are winter and summer holidays. At many universities, there are also summer schools.

WHICH PROGRAMS CAN WE STUDY AT UNIVERSITIES?

Associate degree programs: Takes two years to complete. Vocational high school graduates can get into those schools without taking a central exam.

Undergraduate programs: Usually takes four years. But the period of study for some programs, such as medicine, is 6 years.

Postgraduate programs: Master programs take two years. But at some areas, there are master programs without dissertation and these take 1.5 years. Doctoral programs take about 4 years.

ARE THERE STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMS?

Almost all Turkish universities participate in the EU’s student exchange program Erasmus, which gives both students and academicians the right to move in between European countries for one or two semesters. Besides, there are programs such as Farabi, which enables exchange between Turkish universities and Mevlana, which provides exchange between Turkish universities and other countries.

WHAT ARE THE TUITION FEES?

In Turkey, there are two kinds of universities; state universities and non-profit foundation universities. Minimum and maximum fees for higher education programs of state universities are announced at the beginning of each academic year. Fees for international students vary among state and foundation universities, while fees also vary from one university to another.

The estimated tuition fees are as follows:

State Universities: At those universities, the undergraduate program fees vary between 250-750 American dollars for Turkish programs and 450-1500 American dollars for English programs. The postgraduate program fees vary between 300-600 dollars for Turkish programs, and 600-900 dollars for English programs.

Foundation Universities: Tuition fees for undergraduate and postgraduate programs are between 5.000-20.000 American dollars per year.

WHAT ARE YOUR CHANCES TO GET A SCHOLARSHIP?

Foundation universities awardinternational students different amounts of scholarships. Those scholarships are granted by universities in accordance with your success and your economic situation. However, the Republic of Turkey gives scholarships to international students. Those state scholarships have two sources. Another state founded scholarship is provided by TÜBİTAK. The scholarships of this institution are listed as scholarships for undergraduate students, research funds for foreign citizens, postgraduate scholarships for least developed countries and postgraduate scholarships for international students.
